Affordable-luxury watches

Watches built to last,
and what they cost to keep

Every other guide stops at the purchase price. We publish the second number — what the watch costs to keep running for twenty years — and rank on it.

Why this site exists

We haven’t tested these watches. Nobody who reviews this many has.

Every guide in this category claims hands-on testing of dozens of watches. We don’t make that claim, because it wouldn’t be true.

What we do instead is read the manuals, compile the published specifications, and do the arithmetic — including the one number nobody else publishes: what the watch costs to keep running for twenty years. Seiko charges $176 to overhaul a 4R36 and recommends doing it every three years. Over two decades that is more than most of these watches cost to buy. It is also completely absent from every competing guide we read.

Every figure on this site is cited to a document you can open. Where we don’t know something, the page says so in those words.

How this is funded

Nobody pays us to like anything

Dial & Lug earns a commission when you buy through an Amazon link here. You pay exactly the same price. We hold no inventory, take no payment for placement and accept no free product — which is why we can tell you the cheaper watch is the better buy, and regularly do.

Commission is not an input to the Keep Score, which is computed from specifications alone. Several watches we rate highly are sold direct by their makers rather than on Amazon; we name them, link the maker, and earn nothing.
